Yemeni Journalists Demand Release of Colleagues from Insurgents’ Prisons

Dozens of journalists and activists held protests in Al Jawf, Taiz and Ma'rib to decry what their colleagues are going through in the prisons of Houthis, coinciding with the World Press Freedom Day on May 3.

Their colleagues are being tortured in the insurgent militias prisons, they said, urging local and international organizations to interfere to save the journalists and quickly release them.

The protesters denounced insurgent Houthis’ continuous targeting of journalists and provocation against them, following the speech of the Houthis leader who said that journalists are more dangerous than fighters in battlefronts.

During the protests, they asked international organizations and community to hold responsibility and practice pressure on Houthi militias to stop targeting journalists and to release the captives and stop issuing execution sentences.

Yemen's Minister of Information Moammar al-Eryani asked the international community to put pressure on Houthi insurgents to release journalists and to put an end to the militia violations against the freedom of speech.

Eryani statement was made during his visit along with Mohammed Al-Jaber, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Yemen, to Austria Press Agency in coincidence with the World Press Freedom Day.

He affirmed that the legitimate government is working keenly on providing a secure environment for the freedom of press in liberated regions, reported the agency.

Eryani revealed that the condition is better, currently, and that several newspapers are being re-issued and the ministry is providing facilitations to foreign journalists wishing to visit the liberated regions.

In its turn, the Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate (YJS) hailed on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day the strife of Yemeni journalists in their quest of freedom. The syndicate called on authorities to find quick solutions to restore the rights of those working in media, and relevant international organizations to back journalists in this crisis.
