The legitimate Yemeni government reiterated on Tuesday its call on the Southern Transitional Council to retract its declaration of “self-rule” in the South and return to the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement.
Official Yemeni sources said the government held a virtual meeting to discuss “required efforts to soundly and wisely” preserve the state and stand against any attempt to undermine security and stability and veer efforts away from Yemen’s “existential” battle against the Iran-backed Houthi militias.
At the same time, the government said that it will also stand against any moves that undermine the authority of the state and its institutions.
The cabinet met as the weeklong clashes continued between government loyalists and STC forces in the eastern city of Zinjibar in the Abyan province.
Clashes in the South erupted soon after the STC declared self-rule last month.
The Saba news agency reported that the government discussed humanitarian and health affairs, especially in the interim capital, Aden, and efforts needed to ease the suffering of the people despite the STC’s “deliberate” obstacles.
The sources revealed that President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi was seeking to coordinate with Saudi Arabia, the international community and permanent United Nations Seucirty Council members efforts to back the legitimate government, restore peace and implement the Riyadh Agreement.
The government underlined its support for the pact, adding however, on the Abyan clashes, that it will not allow any party to undermine the authority of the state and prevent it from carrying out its duties towards the people.
