Yemen’s Presidential Council Stresses Need to Contain Shabwah Clashes

The Presidential Leadership Council meets on Monday. (Saba)

The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council stressed on Monday the need to contain the clashes that erupted in Ataq city in the Shabwah province.

The fighting, tied to a struggle over security authority, had broken out between security and military forces. One soldier was killed and a number of others were wounded in the unrest.

The council, which met on Monday to address the fighting, warned of the consequences of the unrest on the “internal front.”

Official sources revealed that the council dismissed a number of military and security leaders in wake of the fighting.

The council was briefed on the situation in Shabwah and the efforts to contain the fighting.

It took a number of decisions that should end the tensions and ensure they do not happen again, reported the state news agency Saba.

Official sources said the council warned of the impact the fighting would have on efforts to restore the unity of the state and end the coup by the Iran-backed Houthi militias. The unrest will only compound the suffering of the people and weaken the economy, it added.

The council is making efforts to unify military and security forces under the defense and interior ministries.
