A Portuguese-flagged container ship, the MSC Orion, was attacked by a drone in the Arabian Sea, approximately 600 kilometers off the coast of Yemen. This incident marks the first confirmed deep-sea assault claimed by Yemen's Houthi rebels since they began targeting ships in November.
The attack occurred last Friday, with the crew discovering drone debris on board after the incident. Fortunately, the ship sustained only minor damage, and all crew members are reported to be safe.
The MSC Orion, associated with London-based Zodiac Maritime and operating on behalf of the Mediterranean Shipping Co., was likely targeted due to its perceived Israeli affiliation, according to the Joint Maritime Information Center.
Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, raising questions about their ability to carry out such an assault hundreds of kilometers from Yemen's shores on a moving target. The Houthis primarily operate in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Iran, believed to be supporting the Houthis, has been linked to previous complex attacks, including the 2019 assault on Saudi Arabia's oil fields. The Houthis have launched over 50 attacks on shipping since November, impacting maritime traffic in the region.
Recent footage released by the rebels shows a drone attack on another vessel, the Cyclades, and the claimed downing of a U.S. military MQ-9 Reaper drone. The U.S. military confirmed the drone crash and stated that an investigation is ongoing.
These incidents highlight the ongoing tensions in the region and the challenges posed by maritime security threats in the Arabian Sea.
