Yemen Reports Spike in COVID-19 Deaths

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Yemen reached 1,638 after cases increased during the third COVID-19 wave.

Yemen's National Emergency Committee for COVID-19 recorded 37 new confirmed cases and ten deaths, compared to 36 cases and nine deaths on Friday.

The statement said that Aden has the highest death rate of three, followed by Hadhramaut, Taiz, and Lahj with two deaths each and one death in Shabwa.

The total number of cases in the areas under the control of the internationally recognized Yemeni government in the south and east of the country rose to 8,630, of which 5,363 recovered.

Officials believe that the actual number of COVID-19 infections in Yemen is much higher, but most cases do not go to hospitals due to poverty and lack of confidence in the health sector.

The Houthi group, which controls Sanaa and some cities in the north and west of the country, does not reveal the numbers of coronavirus infections and deaths.

The group only announced three infections and one death since the pandemic outbreak in Yemen in April 2020.

More than six and a half years of war has undermined the health system in Yemen, which the United Nations says is already suffering from one of the world's worst health crises.
