The legitimate Yemeni government reported on Friday 21 new coronavirus cases, including three deaths, the coronavirus committee said on Twitter.
The committee added that 13 of the new cases were in the interim capital, Aden, and eight in Hadramout, including the three deaths.
The Aden-based government committee said the tally for confirmed coronavirus cases in areas under its control now stands at 106, including 15 deaths.
United Nations envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, reported “significant progress” in negotiations toward a nationwide ceasefire in the war-torn country on Thursday, but warned of stark challenges as coronavirus spreads at an unknown rate across the Arab nation.
Griffiths urged the legitimate government and Iran-backed Houthi militias to quickly resolve their differences over humanitarian and economic measures needed to move peace efforts forward and help the country counter the virus.
Griffiths spoke to the UN Security Council in a video briefing, saying that steps to allow medical supplies and personnel to reach vulnerable people are “now a very, very urgent priority.”
The government and WHO have criticized the Houthis for their lack of transparency, as just two cases, including one death, have been recorded in territory under their control.
