A delegation from the legitimate government would not head to Sweden for peace consultations before the Iran-backed Houthi delegation reaches the European country, Yemeni government sources said Wednesday.
They added that UN envoy Martin Griffiths might accompany the delegation representing the Houthis to Oman before heading to Stockholm.
The Sweden talks between the legitimate government and Houthis were originally set for November but they have been pushed to December due to logistic reasons.
Griffiths was scheduled to meet with Houthi officials in Sanaa to persuade them and the legitimate government to begin negotiations in Sweden early next month.
Asharq Al-Awsat learned from informed sources that peace talks would be held between December 5 and 10, probably in a small city in Sweden and not necessarily in the capital.
US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Wednesday he expected the warring parties would hold peace talks in Sweden early next month.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates “are fully on board” with the efforts of the UN envoy to assemble all sides in the conflict at the table for the first time in years, he added.
