Yellowstone spinoff centered on Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton greenlit at CBS

CBS has given the green light to a new Yellowstone spinoff, centered on Luke Grimes’s Kayce Dutton.

The show, titled Y: Marshals, will see 41-year-old Grimes return as Dutton and follows the character as he joins the US Marshals.

According to Variety, the project was first reported on in March but the network has now officially announced it will proceed with a 13-episode series.

Production is scheduled to begin shooting this summer and the show is expected to arrive next year.

In the original Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton was the youngest son of ranchers John and Evelyn Dutton, played by Kevin Costner and Gretchen Mol. When fans last saw him, he had retained a small parcel of the Yellowstone Dutton ranch after selling the majority to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation.

According to the official logline for the new show, Dutton is remaining in Montana. It reads: “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Grimes, who is also a country singer, told The Independent last year that he was frustrated by the politicisation of Yellowstone.

“I think a lot of people see a cowboy hat and a horse and they think, ‘Oh, that’s not for me, those people believe differently.,’” said Grimes.

“And it’s almost like they take these flawed characters in the show and chalk it up to some sort of weird belief that they’ve put on them. Meanwhile, you can have a terrible person like [Succession’s] Logan Roy, who lives in an apartment in Manhattan, and that’s fine.

“That guy’s a total piece of s***! But that’s OK. It’s so funny to me because… I just don’t understand why that has to immediately equal some political belief. And I don’t think it does.”

In December, Grimes said he felt Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone made the final installment of the hit Western show “the easiest season we’ve filmed.”

He told Esquire: “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone. Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”
