Yellow weather warning issued for snow as North East braces itself for Storm Bella

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning of snow and ice as Storm Bella hits the North East.

Rain, sleet and snow is likely overnight on Sunday into Monday.

The winter weather will move south from Scotland and Northern Ireland on Sunday evening and expected to hit parts of Northern England come Monday morning.

The warning will be in place from Sunday at 6pm to 10am on Monday.

Drivers and those commuting should expect travel disruptions with some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

The Met Office also warned that there could be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Commuters and pedestrians have been urged to take care when heading out due to the icy surfaces.

The new warning comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for the North East of strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday.

All parts of the UK are being affected as Storm Bella will bring severe gales and heavy rain to the UK and Ireland on Boxing Day.

Winds of up to 70mph are expected in exposed coastal areas across the UK along with further heavy rain.
