Yellow weather warning in place for the weekend with snow possible in the North East next week

A weather warning is in place as strong winds are set to batter the most of the country over the weekend.

A yellow 'be aware' weather warning covers North East on Saturday, with forecasters predicting some sunshine but also heavy showers, some of which will be wintry.

As the warning indicated, wind is likely to hit the region hard, with gales possible at times.

On Sunday, sunshine and showers are predicted. Things are more uncertain by Monday, but Met Office forecasters say it is likely to turn wet and windy, possibly with some snow.

A week of disruption caused by Storm Dennis will be followed by a weekend of "unsettled" weather across the country, according to experts.

Severe weather warnings are in place for most of Northern Britain and Northern Ireland, with snow and ice warnings in Northern Scotland.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Another deep low-pressure system early next week provides a continuation of the extremely unsettled period the UK has endured.

"With further rain in the forecast over the coming days, additional rainfall could create further challenges as river catchments are more likely to respond to extra rainfall more quickly. Flooding, especially in areas already heavily affected, remains a possibility.”

With the ground across the UK already saturated there is also chance of further flooding in some areas.
