Yellow weather warning for Wales as torrential thunderstorms are forecast

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for torrential thunderstorms in Wales as an unsettled pattern continues.

The weather warning - issued for Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Powys and Wrexham - is set to come into effect beginning at at 1pm on Monday, June 15, as strong storms push across the country.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms will break out during the afternoon, unleashing a widespread 15 to 25mm of rain in as little as one hour, forecasters say.

A few spots could see up to 40mm of rain in two or three hours.

Frequent lightning and hail is also possible in some locations.

The Met Office is warning of the risk for flooding and lightning strikes to some homes and businesses.

There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and hail, they said, leading to longer journey times by car, bus and train.

Short term power cuts and outages to other services are also likely.

The thunderstorms will begin to fizzle out by the evening on Monday, with the weather warning coming to an end at 9pm.

However, the unsettled pattern is forecast to continue for much of the week.

Tuesday will begin with patchy fog, though it will clear quickly giving way to a quick bout of sunshine.

By the afternoon, however, heavy and thundery showers will develop the more populated areas of south Wales.

Despite a pleasant temperature of 22 °C, anyone heading outside for exercise or their shopping will want to bring along an umbrella.

The wet and dreary weather will continue on and off until Friday, June 19 for much of Wales.
