The Met Office are warning East Lothian and Midlothian residents to take extra care this evening, as a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and flash flooding is in place.
The weather warning is in place from 6pm to midnight tonight (29 June), and also covers the Scottish Borders and parts of northern England, while lightning is forecast for the west of Scotland. It comes after several days of warm weather: Edinburgh was hotter than Portugal on Thursday.
The Met Office have issued the following advice:
What to expect
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or hail
The warning follows several days of hot weather in the Scottish capital and the Lothians, which in turn followed a short burst of severe flooding , which left people in Edinburgh clinging to their car roofs, and water pouring through the streets.
In short, it might be a good idea to cancel those Saturday evening barbecue plans.
