Yellow weather alert for snow in Scotland as drivers warned of 'tricky' travel conditions

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow in Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and the Borders with snowfall to cause some "tricky" travel conditions.

One to two cm of snow will fall at low levels with four to eight cm expected on higher routes.

The Met Office warning says: "Snow for a time this evening leading to tricky travel conditions, especially over hills."

The weather warning lasts from 3:17pm to 11:45pm tonight.

People should expect roads and railways to be affected, leading to longer journey times by road, bus, and train services.

Some icy conditions may develop following clearance of the sleet and snow, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries, said the forecaster.

The weather for Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and the Borders tonight says: "Mostly cloudy over East Lothian and Borders with further outbreaks of rain, heavy at first, falling as snow on high ground.

"Drier further west with clear periods. Fresh northerly winds, strong along east coast. Minimum Temperature 1 °C."

A yellow warning is the least severe category, followed by amber and then red as the most severe.

Yellow warnings are issued for a range of weather situations, meaning that weather is likely to have some impact on people, such as travel disruption in some places.

As for the rest of Scotland, snowfall is expected Monday with the lead up to Christmas already underway.

Some Scots are facing a second weekend in a row without power after Storm Arwen.
