Yellow alert weather warning as snow and strong winds forecast for Boxing Day

A severe weather warning for snow and strong wind is coming into force in Lanarkshire on Boxing Day.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for tomorrow, which will be in place between 00:15 and 12pm.

Snow and gusts of between 35 and 45mph will hit some parts of the country – leading to disruption and potentially difficult travel conditions.

Temporary blizzard-like conditions will also be encountered above "300-400" metres elevation, though this is more likely in hillier parts.

The warning affects both North and South Lanarkshire.

Meterologists explain that an area of rain moving northwards from England will turn to snow as it reaches the borders.

They said the extent of snowfall is uncertain at this stage – and to keep up to date with the forecast on the Met Office website.

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected by snow or ice, leading to longer journey times by car, as well as by bus and possibly train services
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
