Year when Liverpool's Christmas spirit 'lingered on' weeks after celebrations

Liverpool's Christmas spirit once "lingered on" for weeks after celebrations ended, which led to complaints from a number of residents.

Decades ago, multiple Christmas lights and decorations were left "still adorning the city centre" post Christmas, despite initial plans for them to come down on January 6, the Twelfth Night.

The delay saw the festive spirit continue well into January 1976, much to the dismay of a number of readers who contacted the ECHO to complain at the time.

The Bold Street lights and Christmas tree complex was down, but decorations remained in other shopping areas such as Church Street and although no further electricity was wasted, many were opposed to them still being on display.

The Liverpool ECHO reported how many readers had complained of the delay on January 19, 1976.

The report reads: "Recent storm damage was the reason given today as to the reason why Christmas decorations still adorn the city centre.

"The lights, slung across Lord Street and Church Street, were due to come down on the Twelfth Night, January 6, but they are still swinging high above the streets."

Following readers' complaints The Echo asked the Corporation the reason for the protracted celebration of Christmas.

The report continued: "Miss Barbara Drilsma, of the public relations department, said today: "The city engineer's department, with their long ladders who usually dismantle the lights, have been kept very busy clearing up storm damage. The Bold Street lights are down, so is the Christmas tree complex. None of the lights still up are switched on so there is no wastage of electricity."

"She said the remainder of the £8,000 decorations would be removed as soon as possible."
