Year six primary school pupils to be first to return to classrooms

Children in their final year at primary school will be the first to return to school when lockdown restrictions are lifted, it was reported.

According to a report from the Guardian, Boris Johnson is due to announce next Sunday that year six children, aged 10 and 11, will be the first cohort allowed back into classrooms since their closure on March 18.

They will be closely followed by other primary school children and years 10 and 12 in secondary schools.

Downing Street have confirmed that June 1, after half term, was a target for letting year six pupils return to classrooms, subject to the latest data of the spread of coronavirus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to reveal a lockdown exit plan on Sunday.

A Whitehall source told the Guardian: "The focus is getting primary school pupils back first but only if the R (a measure of how the virus is spreading) is at a safe level.

"After primary schools have returned we will then look at years 10 and 12."
