Year group self-isolating at Blyth primary school after positive coronavirus case

A year group is self-isolating at a Blyth primary school following a confirmed coronavirus case.

Malvin's Close Academy has one positive case with the associated year group being sent home for 14 days.

Meanwhile Croftway Academy, also in Blyth, has confirmed four cases which has led to a number of groups needing to quarantine.

WISE Academies told ChronicleLive that the positive cases were unrelated and they had been following advice from Public Health England.

A spokesman said: "We are able to confirm that there has been one positive Covid-19 case at Malvin's Close Academy, Blyth, resulting in one year group being affected.

"At Croftway Academy there have been four unrelated positive tests which has led to a number of groups being advised to self-isolate following advice from Public Health.

"All appropriate steps have been taken at every stage and in line with advice received from Public Health and the Department for Education.

"The academies will continue to adhere to the latest guidance in handling any such situations. The priority will always be the safety of our pupils, staff and the community."

Another Blyth school - Bede Academy - has also confirmed a member of staff was diagnosed with Covid-19.

A "small number" of children were found to have come into close contact with that person, and have been asked to stay at home until the self-isolation period is up.

The three Northumberland schools add to the growing list across the region to have recorded coronavirus cases since reopening in September.

Some have asked full year groups or bubbles to work from home in case symptoms develop, while others have been able to identify individual close contacts who are asked to self-isolate.

But chief medical officer for England Professor Chris Whitty said that coronavirus rates in school age children "are really not changing very much".
