Year group at Rogerstone Primary School in Newport told to stay at home after positive coronavirus case

Children in a year group at a primary school in Newport have been told to stay at home due to a positive case of coronavirus.

All pupils in year 4 at Rogerstone Primary School and a number of other pupils have been told to stay home and not return to school until December 3.

In a letter, head teacher Steve Rayer said parent and guardians had been contacted on Thursday informing them of the confirmed case.

"Further to our earlier text informing you of a confirmed case of Covid-19 in year 4, in line with guidance from Welsh Government, Environmental Health and, Newport City Council, all pupils in year 4 and pupils who travelled on the Tan bus in the mornings this week, will need to self-isolate for 14 days," Mr Rayer said.

"Your child should not return to school until Thursday, 3 December."

A number of year groups across different schools in Newport are currently self-isolating following cases of coronavirus this week.

A class in year 4 at St Andrew's Primary School, as well as some students at Lliswerry High School and Bassaleg School have been sent home following positive cases.

On Thursday, it was revealed that more than half of all schools in Wales have had cases of the virus.

A total of 336 new cases among staff and pupils were recorded in the six days to November 18, compared with 268 in the week to November 11.
