Year group at Lliswerry High School in Newport sent home after coronavirus case

A year group at a Newport secondary school has been sent home to self-isolate after a student tested positive for coronavirus.

All students in year 10 and "a very small number of year 11" students at Lliswerry High School have been told to self-isolate until Friday, November 27 after the school was notified of the case.

In a letter to parents, head teacher Neil Davies wrote on Sunday: "Unfortunately, this evening I was notified of a confirmed case of Covid-19 with a year 10 learner.

"A very small number of year 11 learners have also been identified as close contacts of our case and their parents/carers will be contacted.

"In line with guidance from Welsh Government, Environmental Health and Newport City Council, all learners in year 10 and those identified learners in year 11 will need to self-isolate immediately and remain in self-isolation up to and including Friday, November 27."

Mr Davies said students not in year 10 or who are not part of the close contacts identified in year 11 could attend school as normal.

He said: "If your child is in year 10 or an identified ‘close contact’ from year 11, [they] must self-isolate by staying at home.

"Your child should remain home. Do not go to public areas or other people’s houses, and do not use public transport or taxis until Saturday, November 28. Minimise contact with other people in your home and do not invite people to visit your home."

Local data released on Monday revealed that a number of areas in Newport are still suffering from high levels of coronavirus. Stow Hill (244 per 100,000), Lawrence Hill (242), and Victoria and Somerton (278) still have more than 200 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 of population.
