One bubble of pupils has been sent home from a Newcastle primary school as a precaution after a confirmed Covid-19 cases.
Children in years 5 and 6 at St George's RC Primary School in Scotswood, to the West of Newcastle, have been told to go home as a precaution while advice is sought from public health bosses on how many of the children need to self-isolate for the full 14 days.
In a statement to parents on Facebook, a spokesperson for the school said: "As most of you will be aware by now, we have had a confirmed positive Covid-19 test within the year 5/6 bubble.
"As a precautionary measure, we have closed the bubble immediately.
"We are awaiting advice from Public Health with regards to how long for etc. Please stay at home until you receive further information."
When ChronicleLive contacted the school, deputy head Catriona Powell said: "We have got one confirmed positive case in one classroom, and we are following the advice of Public Health."
A number of schools across the region have been affected by coronavirus after they reopened earlier this month. Some have asked full year groups or bubbles to work from home in case symptoms develop, while others have been able to identify individual close contacts who are asked to self-isolate.
As of 9am on Wednesday, there have been a further 6,178 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, taking the overall number of cases confirmed to 409,729.
The government has also said a further 37 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 41,862.
