A Year 4 student at a primary school has tested positive for Covid-19.
The news was announced on Tuesday in a letter to parents from Sacred Heart Primary, a Roman Catholic school off Fenham Hall Drive, in Fenham, Newcastle.
Pupils who came into close contact with the child have now been asked to isolate at home.
Headteacher Barbara Brown wrote: "We have been notified today of a child who has tested positive for Covid-19 within Year 4.
"The pupil concerned has been absent for a week (since the onset of symptoms). I can assure you that we are following all guidance and are working closely with the Health Protection Team.
"We are confident that we have identified the pupils who have come into close contact with the confirmed case, and the parents/carers of all affected pupils have been contacted.
"The pupils who we have identified as close contacts of the positive case will not return to school until they have completed their 14-day isolation period, in line with guidance.
"Please note, this is calculated based on the onset of symptoms in the child who has tested positive, so is not necessarily 14 days from today."
All other pupils in the school have been asked to continue attending classes as normal as long as they do not have symptoms of the virus.
Mrs Brown added: "Thank you for your continued support in these challenging times."
This is the latest in a growing number of schools affected by coronavirus over the past few weeks.
A number of sites across the North East have confirmed Covid-19 cases. Several have had to partially close, while others have asked year groups or bubbles to self-isolate.
