A Yate man with a history of assaulting women was jailed after a judge told him he had failed a "basic astronomy test".

The 51-year-old, of Rodford Ride in Yate, pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage on March 6.

He also admitted two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on June 15 and 19.

Sentencing today (Tuesday, August 10), Judge Lambert jailed him for 20 months.

He told Morris: "You are a serial abuser.

"You oppress and overbear people.

"When you don't get your own way you turn violent.

"You failed a basic astronomy test - the world does not revolve around you."

Robert Yates, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court how Morris punched the daughter of his partner, and damaged a door at her home.

The court heard on another occasion, after he came out of hospital following a heart attack, he punched his partner to her forehead - appearing to be upset she didn't meet him at hospital.

Morris also admitted assaulting her on a second occasion after they had returned home from a hotel stay.

Lucy Taylor, defending, said her client was under significant anxiety and had lashed out.

She told the court he was due to undergo intensive counselling before he was remanded in custody.

Miss Taylor added Morris was finding prison very difficult but had attained a job in the recycling department which he was enjoying.
