Yate dangerous driver crashed 'tatty' VW Bora containing child and drums of fuel

A dangerous driver who crashed after being chased by police was found to have his child and drums of fuel in the car.

Police tried to pull Luke Gill over when they spotted him driving his "tatty car" with his hood pulled up.

Bristol Crown Court heard the dad-of-four sped off and caused so much concern police aborted a chase.

But a judge watched closely as a prosecutor played dashcam footage of Gill narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle before slamming into the rear of another.

Gill, 27, of Algars Drive in Yate, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving without a driving licence or insurance in December last year.

Judge Alastair McGrigor jailed him for eight months.

He told Gill: "Your driving was extremely dangerous.

"You put the lives of other road users, pedestrians, your son and yourself in extreme danger."

Gill was banned from driving for 18 months and told to take an extended driving test.

His licence was endorsed and he was told to pay a £140 victim surcharge.

Grace Flynn, prosecuting, said police saw hoodie-wearing Gill driving a "tatty" VW Bora on Station Road, Yate, and thought he looked suspicious.

When they activated their blue lights Gill sped off through the 30mph zone up to 60mph and caused other drivers to take evasive action.

Miss Flynn said Gill drove down the centre of Goose Green Way at 70mph and concerned police backed off.

She told the court: "Police called off the pursuit and lost sight of the vehicle."

Moments later a driver's dashcam captured the moment when Gill approached on the wrong side of the road, head-on, before veering into the back of a another car.

Miss Flynn said: "Police arrived to find the debris.

"The defendant exited his car and he began to run.

"He was pursued on foot.

"Police produced a Tazer, the defendant cooperated and police were alarmed to see the defendant had his four-year-old boy in his arms.

"It is clear the child was in the car throuhout the pursuit.

"Red diesel was in drums in the boot.

"There was no child seat in the car."

John Stokes, defending, said his client lived with his mum and dad after separating from his partner.

Mr Stokes said: "He saw the police, he realized he had no insurance and he simply panicked and drove away.

"Now he has considerable regret.

"He recognizes further harm could have been caused such as an explosion or harm to his young child."
