Yoán Moncada exits White Sox's 8-5 victory against Twins with bruised right hand

CHICAGO — Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada left Thursday’s 8-5 victory against the Minnesota Twins before the start of the fourth inning with a bruised right hand.

The Sox said he’s being further evaluated.

Moncada suffered the injury while sliding headfirst into third base during the third inning at Guaranteed Rate Field. He received attention from trainers but remained in the game and scored on a Yasmani Grandal single.

When the fourth began, the Sox moved Andrew Vaughn to third. Moncada singled twice before exiting.

The infield already is missing starting second baseman Nick Madrigal, who is out for the season after suffering a torn right hamstring on June 9.

Starting outfielders Eloy Jiménez, Luis Robert and Adam Eaton, along with reserve outfielders Adam Engle and Jake Lamb, are on the injured list, as are relievers Aaron Bummer and Evan Marshall.

Infielder/outfielder Leury García was a late scratch before Thursday’s game, with manager Tony La Russa saying, “Just felt physically, didn’t want to push him after playing last night and the day before.” García entered in the eighth as a defensive replacement at third.

The Sox got home runs from Brian Goodwin and Zack Collins to complete a three-game sweep of the rain-shortened series.

Goodwin’s home run gave the Sox a 1-0 lead in the second. Moncada scored on Grandal’s hit during a two-run third inning.

Sloppy defense in the fifth played a role in a four-run inning for the Twins. The Sox took advantage of a Twins error to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Collins broke the tie with a solo home run in the sixth. Billy Hamilton, who entered in Moncada’s slot in the order, doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly in the inning.

The Twins loaded the bases in the seventh, but reliever Garrett Crochet struck out Miguel Sanó to end the threat. The Sox scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by Danny Mendick and Collins.

The Sox have won four straight, with at least seven runs in each victory. They embark on a three-city, nine-game trip leading up to the All-Star break, beginning Friday at Detroit.
