Dazzling throws from Yasiel Puig are neither new nor surprising, as the Cuban-born outfielder started showing off his incredible right arm pretty much the moment he arrived in the Majors in 2013. But Thursday night saw a rare gem even by Puig’s standards, both for the throw itself and the oddball double-play it started.
In the ninth inning of a game against the Cardinals, St. Louis baserunner Harrison Bader took off from first and got a great read on a blooper off the bat of pinch-hitter Edmundo Sosa. Bader saw that the ball was going to drop in short right field, so he blitzed around second and tried to take third. But that’s Yasiel F. Puig out there:
Sosa tried to advance to second on Puig’s bullet to third, but he overslid the bag and was tagged out.
The completion of the double play made for a very sad ending to what was Sosa’s first career MLB hit, but the Cardinals held on to win, 7-4.
