‘Yarn bombing’ exhibition opens up in Co Fermanagh

An exhibition of ‘yarn bombing’ has gone on display at a local school in Co Fermanagh.

St Aidan’s in Derrylin is the host of a number of yarn sculptures and characters, which have been crafted by Derrylin Crochet Group.

The exhibition went on display on Thursday, and will go on until September 4 for anyone to pop in and see some of the artwork.

Crochet group member Christina Wilson said members have been busy throughout the various lockdowns and have plenty of finished products to show off.

“We had a crochet group which met in St Aidan’s school, and while we hadn’t any classes throughout the lockdown people have been crocheting like mad at home,” Christina said.

“We came across another yarn bombing event that we were invited to, so we thought why not do it ourselves.

“There is a garden path with lots of different items people have made, then inside the school we have a separate exhibition of items as well, everything from people to plants to bits of furniture.”

The crochet club in Derrylin has gone back to regular meetings again, and Christina said membership of the group comes from a variety of different backgrounds.

“We’ve started meeting up again once a week since restrictions were lifted in June and it’s great to be back doing it again," she said.

“There are different people coming from different backgrounds, we have all ages of people, cross-border and cross-community elements as well.”
