Yardmen sculpture in East Belfast sprayed with green paint

The Yardmen sculpture in East Belfast has been vandalised, it has emerged.

Green paint was sprayed on the bronze statues that were erected on the Lower Newtownards Road in 2012.

Adam Newton, a DUP rep in the area, condemned the incident.

He added: “It is sad to see the iconic Yardmen statute has been vandalised. I will be reporting this to Belfast City Council and seeking to have it restored as soon as possible.

"Measures that preserve and protect the statues mean power hosing is not applicable and the repairs costly.”

The sculpture is one of three workers from the nearby shipyard.

The bronze by Irish artist Ross Wilson depicts the Harland and Wolff staff walking home in a tribute to the industrial legacy and history in East Belfast.

The shipyard cranes, Samson and Goliath, can be seen in the background.
