Arsenal were poor at the New Tottenham Stadium in the first North London Derby of the season.
The Gunners had the majority of the ball in the opening 45 minutes but were made to pay by Tottenham in two sweeping counter-attacking moves.
First, Son Heung-Min was left in space on the left side of the pitch and allowed to take a touch inside before curling into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Then, when Arsenal flooded the Tottenham box in search of an equaliser, they were left with a five on two situation as Spurs broke and counter-attacked. Son found Kane inside the box on the left and the Spurs striker slammed the ball into the net off the crossbar.
Mikel Arteta made numerous changes throughout the game, but one decision he made was heavily criticised by Everton star Yannick Bolasie afterwards.
The Gunners brought on Dani Ceballos just before half-time and the Spaniard injected some life into their performance, as Arsenal dominated the second half and kept Jose Mourinho's side penned inside their own penalty area, but had nothing to show for their possession.
Arteta's side were clearly lacking some creativity, and were unable to penetrate the Spurs defence despite having 54 crosses.
The Gunners manager opted to leave Maitland-Niles on the bench for the trip across north London, and refused to bring him on despite the situation perhaps calling for it.
And that decision was slammed by Everton player Bolasie, who took to Twitter to post: "Free AMN" in reference to the winger's situation at the Emirates.
Maitland-Niles was tipped to leave the club during the previous transfer window, with Wolves said to be interested.
There were reports that a £25million fee had been agreed between the two clubs, but eventually the speculation came to nothing.
