Yann Songo'o decision made by Hearts after French midfielder's trial spell comes to an end

Yann Songo’o’s trial spell at Hearts is over and the Frenchman won’t be offered a deal, Edinburgh Live understands.

The former Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Scunthorpe United midfielder has been training with the Jambos over the last week or so.

Robbie Neilson ran the rule over the 28-year-old in friendly games against St Mirren and Burnley, with Songo’o playing 45 minutes against each.

Despite Neilson being on the lookout for a central midfielder and a central defender and Songo’o being able to operate in both positions, he hasn’t done enough to earn himself a deal for the upcoming Championship campaign.

With Peter Haring still being eased back to fitness after well over a year out, Neilson wants a defensive minded player in the middle of the park to bolster his options in the engine room.

A centre back wasn’t on the list until John Souttar ruptured his Achilles for the second time in a matter of months and required another operation, forcing Neilson to think again.

Talks with former Ipswich defender Tommy Smith didn’t come to anything, although the Jambos have until October 5 before the transfer window closes to get their remaining business done.
