Yankees trade pair of minor leaguers to Rangers for veteran second baseman Rougned Odor

NEW YORK — The Yankees acquired Rougned Odor in the hopes that they will be able to get the 27-year-old lefty-hitting second baseman to reach his potential.

The Yankees sent a pair of minor leaguers to the Rangers for the infielder on Tuesday. Odor was designated for assignment before opening day. He has struggled at the plate and defensively in recent seasons.

In 2020, he hit .167 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 38 games with the Rangers.

He has hit .237 with 146 doubles, 26 triples, 146 home runs and 458 RBIs in 858 games over parts of seven big league seasons, all with the Rangers.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said they see him as a versatile infielder, even though he has only played second base in this career. Boone said they saw him play third base this spring.

Odor has two years and $27 million remaining on his contract, with Texas expected to pick up much of it. The Yankees sent outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers to the Rangers.
