Yankees' Teixeira announces he will retire at season's end

NEW YORK _ Mark Teixeira will retire at the end of the 2016 season, his 14th in the majors.

The Yankees first baseman announced he will hang it up at an afternoon news conference Friday at Yankee Stadium.

The switch-hitter is going through another injury-plagued season at age 36, with a slash line of .198/.287/.340 in just 72 games.

He signed an eight-year, $180 million contract to join the Yankees after the 2008 season, joining fellow high-priced free agents CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett in helping the Yankees win the 2009 World Series, their last championship.

In that season, Teixeira finished second in AL MVP balloting, won the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger award and made the AL All-Star team.

One of the best fielding first basemen of his generation, Teixeira this year became one of just five switch-hitters in baseball history to top the 400-home run mark, joining former teammate Carlos Beltran.

Teixeira hasn't played a full season since 2011. Wrist surgery and its after effects had limited Teixeira until last season, when he was enjoying a renaissance year with 31 homers and 79 RBIs. But then he fouled a ball off his leg in mid-August and suffered a season-ending fracture.

This season, Teixeira has dealt with neck issues and a chronic right knee problem. He's playing with damaged cartilage, which would have forced him to receive surgery in the offseason if he had wished to play on.

A .269 career hitter, Teixeira has 404 home runs and 1,281 RBI (through Thursday).
