Yankees' Tanaka closing in on return from disabled list

BOSTON _ Masahiro Tanaka threw a bullpen session Friday at Fenway Park and the Yankees are targeting next week's series at Detroit for the right-hander to come off the disabled list.

Tanaka, who's been on the DL since Saturday with right shoulder inflammation, said he threw 37 pitches and came away from the session encouraged.

"I thought it was a really good session," Tanaka said through an interpreter.

Manager Joe Girardi wasn't ready to say exactly which day Tanaka would start.

"It will be Detroit," Girardi said. "Let's see how he feels before we announce exactly which day."

Tanaka, who's had an inconsistent season and is 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA, was sidelined after experiencing soreness following his Aug. 9 start at Toronto.

The righty said he typically experiences some soreness after each start, but felt worse and it didn't subside as quickly as it normally does.

The 28-year-old said he has experienced this issue in the past. Tanaka said he's gone through more exercises this time around, "and so I feel like I'm coming back at a faster pace."
