NEW YORK _ After a delay of more than two hours, the Yankees-Orioles series opener scheduled for Monday at Yankee Stadium has been postponed to Wednesday.
First pitch originally was slated for 6:35 p.m., before the Yankees announced it would be delayed until "approximately" 7:45 p.m. The grounds crew worked beyond that time to dry out a soggy spot in shallow left field, using leaf blowers and squeegees to try and make the field playable.
The decision to call the game finally was made at 8:48 p.m. Wednesday's game will be part of a single-admission doubleheader starting at 3:05 p.m.
The scheduled starting pitchers _ Luis Cessa (0-0, 3.32 ERA) for New York and David Hess (1-4, 5.50) for Baltimore _ did not warm up. No immediate announcement was made about their availability for the make-up game.
Lefty J.A. Happ (2-3, 4.36) is the scheduled Yankees starter for Tuesday's game, with Domingo German (7-1, 2.70) set to follow in Wednesday's series finale.
