HOUSTON _ Yankees starter Luis Severino is headed back to New York for additional tests on his ailing right shoulder.
At Tampa, Fla., Severino, who was diagnosed early in March with right rotator cuff inflammation, had been ramping up his throwing program in recent weeks, long-tossing at just beyond 120 feet.
But he hadn't felt comfortable enough to resume throwing off a mound. On Monday, "he didn't feel as great," manager Aaron Boone said.
Severino is scheduled to undergo another MRI on Tuesday and will be re-examined by the club's team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
"A couple of days ago, when he got out to 130 feet, it was probably the best day he's had. And today, not as great," Boone said. "So, we're going to get him up to New York and get some answers.
"He feels OK, but just not where he wants to be."
This is a troublesome trend for the club's ace right-hander, who signed a four-year, $40 million extension shortly after Yankees pitchers and catchers reported to spring training.
Originally, the club hoped to have Severino back in the rotation at some point in May. Now, that would appear to be an ambitious timetable; the right-hander still requires something of a full spring training.
