Yankees' Holliday improving, could be back Monday

NEW YORK _ The Yankees were without Matt Holliday again on Sunday, but manager Joe Girardi expects him to be able to play in Monday's series opener against the White Sox.

Holliday, 37, was originally in Saturday's lineup but was scratched an hour before the game because of lower back stiffness.

Girardi said Holliday felt better on Sunday, but decided to give him an extra day of rest out of caution.

"I thought I'd give him one more day," Girardi said. "He still feels it a little bit. I'd be surprised if he's not a player for me tomorrow. I will see where he is as we go through the day and see if he's available to me. I think he wants to play but my fear is yes, if you still feel it and you aggravate it, you may be down for a week and that's what we don't want."

Holliday is hitless in his past 11 at-bats after going 8-for-22 with one home run and five RBIs to start the season.
