NEW YORK _ Gleyber Torres hit two of the Yankees' four home runs against starter David Hess, on the way to a 5-3 victory against the Orioles.
In the first game of a straight doubleheader on Wednesday, the Yankees used four bullpen arms after starter J.A. Happ, stringing the final 3 2/3 innings with scoreless relief.
Happ did not seem thrilled to exit after just 64 pitches. But surrendered two solo homers and the Yankees hadn't played since Sunday at Tampa Bay; two rainouts against the Orioles had provided manager Aaron Boone with a fresh bullpen.
And the Yankees have a scheduled off date on Thursday prior to hosting the first-place Rays this weekend.
With the win, the Yanks (25-16) moved to within a half-game of the Rays atop the AL East.
Torres hit solo homers in his first two at-bats against Hess, while Gary Sanchez launched a long solo homer in the first inning that cleared the Yankees' bullpen in right-center field.
Cameron Maybin hit his first homer as a Yankee in the second inning, a solo shot. A three-base error by right fielder Trey Mancini, who dropped a fourth-inning Gio Urshela fly ball toward the right field line, allowed the Yanks an unearned run when Mike Tauchman sent a two-out RBI single up the middle.
Happ (3-3) was charged with three runs on five this with no walks and three strikeouts. Hess (1-5) lasted six innings, yielding four earned runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
