Top Yankees prospect Gleyber Torres has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced Monday.
The Yankees expect Torres to be recovered in time for 2018 spring training.
Torres, who was examined by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Monday, will have surgery "at a date to be determined," according to the Yankees.
Torres suffered the injury while sliding head-first into home plate Saturday during a game with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The 20-year-old infielder was batting .309 in 23 games with Scranton.
