DETROIT _ On the way to 100-plus wins this year, the Yankees remain vulnerable against the 100-loss Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees belted out six more home runs on Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Tigers from claiming a 12-11 victory at Comerica Park.
Jordy Mercer's one-out, ninth-inning RBI hit off Chance Adams gave Detroit (43-100) its third win in four games against the Yankees (95-51) this year � the first two of which occurred in April.
Adams was the Yankees' eighth pitcher on Tuesday as their attempt to bullpen their way through the game backfired, a rarity this year for Aaron Boone's club (they'd complied a record of 13-2 in games in which they employed an opener heading into Tuesday).
Both Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius each hit two home runs, with Gregorius' solo blast breaking a 10-10 tie in a three-run seventh that included a tying, two-run shot by Edwin Encarnacion.
But the Yankees blew leads of 6-0 and 8-6 before taking that brief 11-10 lead.
