TORONTO _ More than a week after Jacoby Ellsbury suffered a concussion, symptoms persist.
"He's just not quite ready," Joe Girardi said Thursday before the Yankees started a four-game series against the Blue Jays. "He just doesn't quite feel himself."
Ellsbury, who suffered the concussion as well as a neck sprain when he ran into the center-field wall while making a catch May 24 at the Stadium, had been making progress. On Tuesday in Baltimore, Ellsbury, who is on the seven-day concussion disabled list, said the headaches he had been experiencing finally were starting to go away. The Yankees had him do some light running and take batting practice, but for now, increasing his baseball activity is on hold.
"His neck is still sore, too," Girardi said. "Maybe in a couple days we'll get him back, but not quite yet."
Girardi did not rule out Ellsbury returning at some point during this series but sounded a lot less confident about that than he did earlier in the week.
"When you hurt a hamstring, you hurt a quad, you can be pretty sure that if you say two weeks, it'll be two weeks," Girardi said. "But a concussion. you just don't know, and then you throw the whiplash on top of it, it's tough."
