SEATTLE _ Starlin Castro is headed back to the 10-day disabled list, with a recurrence of a right hamstring strain _ an injury the Yankees' second baseman thought he was past.
"It's frustrating. He's frustrated," manager Joe Girardi said after an MRI on Saturday confirmed the strain, which "might be in a different spot" than Castro's previous strain.
Named to the AL All-Star team, Castro was on the DL from June 27-July 14 and did not play in the All-Star Game.
Infielder/outfielder Tyler Wade was being summoned back from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Ronald Torreyes started at second base on Saturday night.
Castro was in the trainer's room as the Yankees prepared for the third of a four-game series against the Mariners at Safeco Field.
Though he said he could run close to 100 percent, Castro had been moving deliberately at times on the field, trying to protect against re-injury.
But on Wednesday afternoon at Minnesota, Castro felt the hamstring tighten up again after hitting a slow roller against the Twins.
Castro was treated with ice after Wednesday 's game and started both Thursday and Friday against the Mariners, going 1 for 4 in Friday's 5-1 win, but the tightness did not subside and the trainer's noticed bruising after Friday's game.
"He argued that he was fine, he could play, and he's still arguing that he's fine and he can play," Girardi said. "But our concern is if he really tears it, then you have a real problem. So we're hoping it won't be long, we'll get him back.
"His strength is good (in the leg), but there's a problem."
For now, Girardi plans to platoon Torreyes and Wade at second base unless one player's performance declares himself as the regular starter.
