Yankees’ Brett Gardner earns another strange ejection

For the second week in a row, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner was ejected from a ballgame under strange circumstances.

Last week in Toronto, Gardner was thrown out of a game by umpire Chris Segal while he was sitting quietly on the bench in the dugout.

The umpire seemed to be reacting to chatter from Yankees manager Aaron Boone and other players on the rail, but Gardner was mistakenly singled out and ejected. Gardner said after the game that a few minutes prior to his ejection, he had banged his bat on the roof of the dugout, but he did not believe that was against the rules.

On Saturday in Yankee Stadium, Gardner once again hit the dugout roof with his bat in response to Boone being ejected by home plate umpire Ben May. First-base umpire Phil Cuzzi threw Gardner out of the game, and walked over to show Gardner that he was ejected was for banging his bat.

Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia was also thrown out amid the chaos.
