East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) will suspend operations on some sections of its Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines on Saturday due to construction work to switch tracks for the new Takanawa Gateway station, which will open next spring in Minato Ward, Tokyo.
It will be the first time that the Yamanote Line has not been in service due to construction work since JR East was established in 1987.
The construction work will be carried out between the last train Friday night and the first train on Sunday.
The Yamanote Line will suspend operations between Osaki and Ueno stations from the first train on Saturday until around 4 p.m. on the day. As a result, trains on the loop line arriving at the two stations will stop and reverse there.
The number of trains operated will be about 70 percent of the normal level. On the Keihin-Tohoku Line, services between Shinagawa and Tamachi stations will be suspended all day. The number of passengers affected is expected to reach about 560,000.
JR East will increase the number of trains on the Ueno-Tokyo Line -- which runs in parallel with the two lines to be suspended -- and other lines, as well as enabling passengers to transfer to non-JR lines such as Tokyo Metro, Tokyu Line, Keikyu Line and Rinkai Line using their JR tickets.
