The number of visitors from Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures to Tokyo last weekend has decreased by about 40% compared to a weekend in early February, Yahoo Japan Corp. said.
The move is believed to have been partly because of the snowfall on Sunday, but also because of requests made by governors of the three neighboring prefectures to refrain from going out.
The company estimated the number of people visiting Tokyo from the three prefectures on weekends based on location tracking of Yahoo Japan app users. Compared to the weekend of Feb. 1 and 2, the number of visitors began to decline in late February, and by March 14 and 15, the number fell to 73%-78%. It increased slightly on March 21 and 22, which was part of the three-day weekend, to 78%-85%, but fell again on the last weekend of March to 60%-63%.
