Yahoo's top searches of 2005

Yahoo! today released its annual list of top searches by users in the UK and, as ever, it is a mix of the expected, the unlikely and the slightly odd.

Food scares, Live 8, the London terror attacks, bird flu, iPod Nanos, various hurricanes, and Jackie Stallone all feature prominently.

At the summit of the overall list of searches on Yahoo! in the UK and Ireland this year was "Sudan 1".

This, of course, was the name of the dye at the centre of a food scare that began in February. The most popular link was the Food Agency's list of almost 600 food products which had been withdrawn. The rest of the top 10 is made up of hurricanes apart from position nine, which, inexplicably is "canine newsletter". I guess people are always going to love dogs. Canine newsletter also tops the list of bizarre searches; second place going to "Candy Bra".

But Jackie Stallone? After some head scratching at GU towers we remembered that she was on Celebrity Big Brother. But still ...

For a more up to date snapshot of what people are searching for right now you may want to also check out Yahoo!'s Buzz Index, or Google Zeitgeist, which showcases recent searches. There's quite a lot about King Kong.
