Yahoo Japan Corp. has said it will hire 100 freelancers and full-time employees of other companies to moonlight for the firm, a practice facilitated by the spread of telecommuting amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The moonlighting staff are expected to be paid from 50,000 yen to 150,000 yen per month and work remotely, the firm said. The spread of the coronavirus has led to more flexible working arrangements, and as a result Yahoo Japan found it easier to recruit a more diverse workforce than ever before.
Yahoo Japan plans to employ applicants in technical and other positions, as well as in strategic planning for its mainstay internet shopping service and new business development, the company said.
It is rare for a major domestic company to recruit moonlighters on an extensive scale.
Yahoo Japan also announced that a telecommuting-based work system will be introduced from October for almost all employees of the firm. It will no longer pay the cost of employees' commuter passes, and provide 7,000 yen per month to cover communication costs and other expenses, the company said.
Yahoo Japan will allow employees to work in cafes, resorts and other places of their choice, if it increases their productivity.
