‘Y’all see that?’: Woman buys 2 bars of Dove body soap. Then she takes a closer look and can’t believe what she’s seeing

With the rise of online retailers like Temu and DHgate, product dupes are fast and easy to come by. No more shelling out your hard-earned money for the real thing (whether it’s the same quality is a debate, however.) Do those dupes extend to beauty products, though? One woman on TikTok claims she came across a “fake” Dove beauty bar. Viewers aren’t so sure.

In a viral video, TikToker @king_jasso3 demands answers after comparing two Dove beauty products. She opens the clip with two Dove beauty soaps side-by-side, their packaging on display.

“I don’t know why y’all ain’t paying attention to this. This one says Dove,” @king_jasso3 says, zooming in on the one to the left. She calls this one the “real one.” The package writes “original moisturizing cream.”

She then pans to the one on the right. “This is the fake one. Y’all see that?” The packaging for this one has the weight in English and Spanish, while the “real” one has writing in English and French. Both write moisturizing cream beauty bar, just in different places.

Fake or not fake?

The majority of @king_jasso3’s viewers came for her neck. Several were adamant that she was mistaken—no fake Dove product was here, they said.

“Different packaging same soap ! they sell smaller versions at dollar tree especially!” one wrote.

Another claimed it was “old and new packaging.”

One user said, “I don’t think neither one of those are fake. Dove products may have different packaging in different regions or countries to meet local regulations or preferences.”

Are they right?

The TikToker’s viewers might not be wrong. While the “fake” Dove beauty bar might look different than the other, both do have the right color scheme (the gold dove logo) and the same pertinent information. The words on the “fake” one have slightly different spacing and placement, which could indicate it’s a dupe, but not necessarily. For instance, what one of the commenters said appears to be true. Discount stores like Dollar Tree sell smaller, different versions of Dove beauty bars. This is due to manufacturers creating “value” or “bulk” versions for these retailers. Furthermore, Dove is sold globally so the Spanish writing isn’t out of place here.

It’s hard to confirm without seeing the bar codes, but if you are ever in doubt, you can contact Dove directly and send the photos for verification.

Is Dove real soap?

Another highly commented criticism on the creator’s video was that she was buying Dove at all. A handful of users pointed out that Dove isn’t soap. After all, it’s labeled as a beauty bar. This debate is nothing new. It seems @king_jasso3’s viewers were right again. Dove Beauty Bar isn’t soap in a legal or chemical sense. While still trusted as a cleansing agent, its makeup is purely synthetic. The Food and Drug Administration regulates it differently, like a cosmetic, as its surfactants are not made with the process of “saponification.”

The question is: Will it get the job done when washing your hands after going to the bathroom? While Dove Beauty Bar is not an anti-bacterial soap, it can’t “kill” the germs, but it still washes it away. Despite a Redditor claiming not to use Dove as soap, it’s still considered perfectly safe to do so.
