Xherdan Shaqiri pulls out of Switzerland squad in major boost for Ireland

Xherdan Shaqiri has pulled out of Switzerland's squad for next Thursday's Euro 2020 qualifier with Ireland.

In a big boost for Mick McCarthy's side, the Swiss FA have revealed that the Liverpool winger has decided to focus all his attentions on his club form.

A statement read: "Xherdan Shaqiri will not be available. He decided to focus fully on his club."

A key figure for the Swiss, Shaqiri's only action for Liverpool this season was a ten minute cameo in the Community Shield.

The 27-year-old has started just one of the last 26 matches for Jurgen Klopp's outfit, featuring for just 142 minutes since the end of February.

His unexpected absence for Switzerland will be welcome news to Ireland fans ahead of the match at the Aviva where the Boys in Green can extend their lead at the top of Group D.

Switzerland are third in the group with four points, six behind Ireland, but they have two games in hand going into the vital Dublin encounter.
