Xherdan Shaqiri opens up on decision to leave Liverpool and join Lyon

Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed one of the key reasons behind why he decided to leave Liverpool this summer.

The Swiss winger joined Lyon in a £9.5m move last month, grabbing an assist on his league debut for the French side against Strasbourg.

Shaqiri had previously been a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad but found his playing time reduced last season, following the arrival of Diogo Jota, limiting the 29-year-old to seven starts across all competitions.

A popular figure among fans, following his influential role in Liverpool ’s famous 4-0 win over Barcelona in 2019, as well as having scored against the Reds’ fiercest rivals, Shaqiri has revealed to French media why he chose to join Lyon.

“Peter Bosz loves possession [based] attacking football.”, Shaqiri reportedly told TF1’s Telefoot show.

“He was one of the main reasons for me to come [to Lyon].

“I want to succeed and take them to a new level. With my experience and my level of game, I want to help this club regain its former glory.

“The objective is to win new trophies, to put Lyon back where it was more than ten years ago. It’s time to take this team to the place it deserves.”

Shaqiri carries considerable European pedigree, having played for both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, prior to signing for Liverpool in 2018.

Though he was only able to make seven appearances during the Reds’ title-winning campaign, he played an important squad role in Jurgen Klopp’s side lifting the club’s sixth European Cup - an honour he previously won with Bayern in the 2012/13 season.

Lyon’s last major title came in the Coupe de France in 2012, with PSG having exerted their domestic dominance, though the French side did recently reach the Champions League semi-finals after a surprise victory over Manchester City in 2020.
