Xherdan Shaqiri on how Liverpool's 'beautiful' Champions League final celebrations affected his Switzerland performance against Portugal

Xherdan Shaqiri has admitted Liverpool's Champions League celebrations made it difficult to perform for Switzerland as they were beaten 3-1 by Portugal on Wednesday night.

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick - two of which came in the final few minutes - settled the Nations League semi-final at Estadio do Dragao as the Portuguese booked their place in Sunday's final.

Shaqiri was an unused substitute on Saturday night as Liverpool secured their sixth European Cup with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid, and the party was a lengthy one for Jurgen Klopp and his squad.

Sunday's open-top bus parade was watched on the streets of Liverpool by an estimated 750,000 people and Shaqiri stated the celebrations made it tough for him to immediately readjust his focus.

The versatile Switzerland international talked up the "beautiful" scenes of supporters across the city as the club toasted their first Champions League triumph since 2005.

Speaking after the game, the Liverpool attacker said: "It was really not easy because you hear my voice, it is not always here.

"So, I think it was really nice and beautiful to celebrate with the fans. For 14 or 15 years we [have] won it again, it was really special and we will never forget this moment."

Shaqiri also conceded it was Ronaldo's individual quality that settled the game in Portugal as the Juventus forward took his international goals tally to 88 goals in 157 games.

"It was maybe not his best game, but in the end he scored three goals and decided the game," he added.

"So yes, a clinical Cristiano Ronaldo decided the game today.

"It is not always about one player but he is one of the best in the world and he showed that today."

Shaqiri recently confirmed his intention to stay at Anfield beyond this summer, saying: "The manager has many good options and has to decide who can play.

"I knew before my transfer that the competition here is very tough. I have a long-term contract and I definitely will stay."
