Xherdan Shaqiri makes surprise international decision as he battles for Liverpool place

Xherdan Shaqiri has asked not to be considered for international selection next month so he can concentrate on his Liverpool career.

Shaqiri has been a mainstay of the Switzerland national team since making his full debut in 2010, earning 82 caps and scoring 22 goals.

He featured in the UEFA Nations League finals during the summer, where he picked up an injury in the third-place play-off that delayed his return to full training during pre-season.

Shaqiri, though, was not part of the Switzerland squad announced on Friday for their forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Gibralatar.

And the official Twitter feed for the Swiss national teams has stated Shaqiri will not be available because he has "decided to focus fully on his club".

Blood Red: Where does Shaqiri fit in at LFC this season?

Switzerland are currently third in Group D behind Ireland and Denmark. However, by reaching the UEFA Nations League finals, they are assured of at least a place in the play-offs to qualify for next summer's tournament.

Shaqiri has started just one of Liverpool's last 26 games and has featured for just 11 minutes as substitute so far this season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke earlier on Friday about how the 27-year-old will be required after the international break with Champions League and League Cup commitments starting.

And it seems Shaqiri is now prepared to put in extra work to ensure he is ready for his first-team opportunity with the Reds.
